I am not The Crazy Chicken Lady. And, I apologize in advance if you are reading this and you are, in fact, the crazy chicken lady.
No, I am a Connoisseur of poultry. And not just of poultry breeds, but of poultry personality. In order to secure a place in my flock, pretty feathers alone just won’t do. A girl needs to have personality and look Mahhh-velous.
Exhibit A. We’ll call her “Jet”.
Jet is a Sicilian Buttercup. She has one facial expression. I call it “startled intensity”. Deer in headlights with a slightly sinister edge to it. Some ladies get this look from too much plastic surgery around the eyes. Jet was born with it.
As a youngster we called her Gollum or Smegol. Do I really need to explain why? She exuded the aura.
One day, I was watering in the backyard and a neighbor that lives catty corner to us stepped out on his balcony from which, I can only assume, overlooks a good portion of our garden. “Hello!” he summoned me. OH GOD, I thought in my prone-to-anxiety brain, HE HATES OUR CHICKENS. “I love your chicken!” “She walks back and forth along the fence!” Instantly, I knew who he was talking about. Me, thinking, where is she? I am going to strangle her! Heh, little does he know there are 15 hens over here pecking around that he can’t see from his vantage point.
“Thank you” I managed, gracefully. Smiling. “Keep up the good work in the garden! We love it!” The neighbor added.
But, when it came to it, and many times after that, I just could not clip her wings. After all, she always came back. I imagine she just wanted to get up high to see what there was beyond her yard. Not long after that, she stopped going up on the back fence without any further prompting or attempted bludgeoning with the green rake.
Months passed. She became an absolute laying machine. 1 white egg per day through the whole Winter. We named her Jet.
Then one day, inexplicably, she learned to fly over the front fence of the chicken yard into our main garden. I chased her back in to the enclosure. But it kept happening. I got tired of herding her back in. I noticed that she didn’t actually eat any of my plants. It was late Winter and I let her scratch and fertilize the empty vegetable beds. I started LIKING her in the garden. After all, that was part of the chicken fantasy that was unrealized (for obvious reasons if you have chickens—they are like the Mongol hoards clear-cutting anything that stands in their way when it comes to ornamentals.
She has become the perfect garden chicken. When its treat time for the other hens, she gladly follows me back into their enclosure. And, recently, I have been able to catch and hold her twice without a major scene.
I like that we’re able to just let her be herself, and she has rewarded us by being an excellent little hen.
